Last weekend, we spent four hours at Hy-Vee, the Iowa based grocery chain that has been taking over the Twin Cities by storm. Were there any regrets? Absolutely not. What started out as a trip for the seasonal endless crab legs deal ($29.99), ended up with us taking advantage of the other Sunday specials. For those of you who have never heard of Hy-Vee or been there to witness the glory for yourself, there is an in-house restaurant that has similar vibes to Baker’s Square. Is it a Michelin star eatery? Ummm…no, but does it have good food at a decent price point? Hail yes it does. So here’s why Hy-Vee has the Ultimate Sunday Funday…
Sundays at Hy-Vee has the Royal Flush of food specials and during our visit, took advantage of each:
- All You Can Eat Crab Legs ($29.99) – comes with a baked potato and side salad (not unlimited).
- All You Can Eat Wings & Fries ($12.99) – wings, fries, sauces galore.
- Half Off Appetizers ($5-$10) – ranges from bruschetta, pepperoni pinwheels, wings, and chips/dips.
- Endless Brunch ($15.00) – prime rib, omelets, cookies, cake, salad, shrimp, pasta, french toast, sausage, bacon, eggs, and fruit.
Pro tip – when ordering the crab, remember to request the honey popovers, these are so decadent with butter. My top picks from the appetizer menu are the jalapeno cream cheese wontons and dip platter.
After our feast of feasts, we needed to walk-it-off so naturally, grocery shopping was the right thing to do. Hy-vee has an awesome international deli filled with lots of goodies from Europe to Asia and it’s just a really well stocked grocery store. The meat and cheese section has a great array of international cheeses, spreads, and crackers (perfect for charcuterie season). One of the unknown aspects of the grocery store is that there is actually a clothing section that rivals H&M. Not only are the clothes on-trend, but they are very affordable and great quality. It was very unexpected when I first stumbled upon the Hy-vee brand clothing, but I’ve been able to pick up some really cute pieces (like my recent teddy bear coat, only $40!). Definitely worth your time.
In summary, you have some time to kill and enjoy browsing the aisles for grocery stores, Hy-vee is great option.
